Realizing investment projects UMMC is focused on technological renewing of its plants in according with the latest requirements, including environmental safety requirements, expanding its own raw materials base, increasing the production of end products and developing the new lines of business. Strategic programs on development of metallurgical and processing complexes up to 2015 and of mining complex up to 2020 have been developed.

Development of raw materials base.

The specific character of doing business in mining and metallurgical industry requires special emphasis on providing the production with raw materials. In many respects planning of long-term strategies is possible only under conditions of full definiteness of raw materials and forecastability, therefore replenishing and expanding of raw materials base play a key role at UMMC.

Key importance is attached to the development of Gaiskiy GOK (Orenburg region), which is the main ore base of UMMC today. In this connection the strategic program of the combine development has been worked out. The main provisions of this program completely comprise the production process and lie in expanding the underground mine (owing to mining of deep and ultradeep levels), in developing the deposit “Osennee” and in technical re-equipping the Gaiskiy GOK concentrator.

As a result by 2009 the concentrator is to achieve the rate of 8 million tones on ore processing. 7 million tones of them will be mined from underground mine yearly. And 1 million tones of them will be yearly mined from the deposits “Letnee”, “Dombarovsko-Levoberezhnoe”, “Osennee” with an open-pit method.

In Altai territory UMMC takes an active part in developing the mining industry. Today the company mines complex ore from the deposits Rubtsovskoe and Zarechenskoe. At the end of 2007 the license for the right to use subsurface mineral resources of the deposits Stepnoe and Talovskoe was obtained. Over the long term Korbalikhinskoye deposit, the richest deposit of zinc-containing ore in Europe, is of special interest. It is located at a great depth up to 1300 m, therefore, the beginning of development causes certain difficulties. Currently, preparatory work on construction of Korbalikhinskoye mine is conducted.

Metallurgical production.

With respect to the way the company’s raw-materials base on copper and zinc is developed, the company actively develops its own facilities on processing raw materials.

At OAO “Uralelectromed” (Sverdlovsk region) in 2006 operations on reconstruction of copper refineries with increasing the output on cathode copper production up to 500 000 tones has been started. Within the scope of reconstruction “Uralelectromed” conducts work on technical re-equipping of vitriolic shop, chemical and metallurgical shop, copper-smelting shop, storage and railway facilities in parallel with creating new copper refineries.

According to the program of long-term development of OAO “Electrozinc” for 2007-2015, the plant is to increase the production of zinc up to 110 000 tones per year, the production of lead up to 50 000 tones per year. For this purpose putting a new line on handling of accumulator scrap into operation, expanding the electrolysis shop with installation of additional stream of electrolysis bathes, putting an oxygen plant into use, reconstructing the lead cake filtration and drying systems have been provided. Two technological lines, the main and standby, are supposed to be created in the course of further modernization of sulphuric acid production.

In 2008 it is planned to complete the development of the project on constructing the zinc plant with the capacity of 140 000 tones in Kirovgrad (Sverdlovsk region). After getting necessary approvals and expert examining construction work will be started. By the end of 2011 the erection of equipment is supposed to be completed, and in 2012 the design capacity of the plant is supposed to be achieved.

The reconstruction of smelting facilities is primarily focused on the solution of ecological problems.

From 2005 till 2008 UMMC intends to invest about $394 million in the Program of reconstruction and technical re-equipment of the chemical and metallurgical complex of Sredneuralskiy copper smelter (Sverdlovsk region). The program provides for constructing the second Vanyukov’s furnace, two new technological systems in the sulphuric acid shop, reconstructing the effluent treatment department and so on. All this will allow the plant to utilize process gas of copper-smelting facility to produce sulphuric acid and thereby to improve ecological situation and optimize the copper-smelting process.

The program of reconstruction of the chemical and metallurgical facility of OAO “Svyatogor” is realized. This program will provide the increasing of the sulphuric acid shop output by a factor of 1,5 and, as a result, atmospheric emissions will be significantly reduced. The plant stepwise provides the compliance of the copper-smelting process with all European requirements on ecology.

In the sector of ferrous metallurgy the holding realizes its first project on constructing the mini-plant.

In Tyumen the company conducts the construction of the electrometallurgical plant with the capacity of 550 000 tones rolled sections per year. The project is based on the latest achievements applicable to metallurgy. Steelmaking will be implemented with the electric-furnace steelmaking method on the basis of iron-and-steel scrap. Main technological equipment of the metallurgical plant is designed, supplied and erected by the company Danieli (Italy). According to preliminary data, the cost of construction is estimated at 457 million EUR.

From smelting and casting through to the final product.

On the basis of scientific, design and marketing studies the investment program for 2005-2008 on creating a new metallurgical facility at Kirov non-ferrous plant has been developed at UMMC. In 2009 technological complex with a whole cycle starting from smelting and casting and up to the production of rolled products 25 micron thick is to operate within Kirov non-ferrous plant. The new complex will include vertical continuous caster, multi-purpose rolling mill, thermal equipment and slitting line for particularly thin strips. Thus, the transparent technology from casting through to the final product will be created. The technology will be able to provide high quality and throughput for the whole process with low wastes generation and low production expenses. The designed capacity of the new equipment for production of high-quality flat rolled products is 11 000 tones a year. The investment in the program execution is estimated at above 800 million rubles.
